Movie Preview: WONDER WOMAN (2017)

Article by: Nick Todd

Things just haven’t been the same for the DC cinematic universe ever since Christopher Nolan’s conclusion to the Dark Knight Trilogy in 2012. Ushering in a new era of comic book themed movies, Warner Bros. was hoping that the conclusion of those seminal Batman films would allow them to close the door on one era of comic book epics and open a new one into the world of “shared universes.” It’s worth noting that Batman is not just an ordinary character, but a timeless hero for each generation – past, present, and future. Superhero comics are widespread and very popular throughout the world, and this is one of the reasons in particular why the genre is flourishing and promoted. In today’s market you can find clothes, toys, and online games including online casino sites who offer many games starring Batman or other DC comics’ superheroes.

Starting with Man of Steel in 2013, Zack Snyder’s take on the DC universe culminated into 2016’s Batman v Superman, a smorgasbord of bloat and comic book melodrama that critically sent the DC universe over a cliff and pushed its most ardent fans close to the edge. However, there was one glimmer of hope that came out of that film, and it was the appearance of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. With BvS being the Amazonian’s first appearance on-screen, it seemed DC fans had a reason to cheer for this June’s release of Diana Prince’s (aka Wonder Woman) titular film, as it looks to be a throwback to the golden age of comics.

Starring Gal Gaddot as Wonder Woman and Chris Pine as love interest Steve Trevor, Wonder Woman will tell the tale of how Diana Prince became the “lasso of truth” wielding heroine the DC universe has come to know her as. With a majority of the film taking place during World War I, the film is taking an interesting approach to an origin story, similar to 2010’s Captain America: The First Avenger.

The film also has some interesting directing chops behind it, as Patty Jenkins (of 2003’s Monster fame, in which Charlize Theron won an Oscar for) is at the helm for the feature.

Set to release on June 2nd, Jenkin’s pitch almost 13 years ago will finally be hitting the silver screen. For DC fans soured by their experiences with “Batman v Superman” and the more recent Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman may be the Warner Bros.’ last chance to convince fans to take the DC universe seriously and prove that there can still be a few interesting and engaging stories to tell inside of it.
