21 Savage // Live @ The Tabernacle // 8.18.17

ATLANTA, GA – Atlanta native Shayaa Bin Abraham-Joseph A.K.A. 21 Savage’s Issa Album Tour stopped by hometown Atlanta for 2 sold-out and crazed-teen filled evenings. Savage, as one of the new leaders of the relatively young trap genre, made his way to the beautifully vintage Tabernacle stage at 9:30 to a fervent and sweaty crowd ready to let all hell loose. Upon entrance, Savage strolls front and center under a Jason Voorhees mask and decked in a blue jump-suit with a microphone in hand, all the while accompanied by stage-partner and hype-man PDE Escobar. While the duo makes a splashy entrance – literally, as they spray plenty of water onto the front-rows’ audience – the remainder of the show takes on a more monotone vibe moving forward, at times Savage seemingly just running out the clock.

Don’t get us wrong, the soon to be 25-year-old ATLien does provide memorable moments during his set, such as performing “Bank Account” whilst actual currency raining over the crowd, his Friday the 13th themed entrance or having attendees illuminate the stage via smart-phones as other singles are performed. Yet, in general, the performance felt a little more hype than delivery and not quite what you’d expect from a performer that monikers himself “Savage.”

Positive takeaways are the spectacular lighting from The Tabernacle and formidable background visuals from the 21 Savage camp, an incredibly committed fan-base that bellowed along to many tracks, and the hype and rhymes put forth by an enthusiastic PDE Escobar. While an Abraham-Joseph show does do justice to its admission price, just be forewarned, the show is not quite as raw and lit as the trap-star’s name would suggest.
