Album Review: LILAH LARSON – PENTIMENTO

Article by: Sydney Rush

Lilah Larson, NYC based musician has just released her first solo album, Pentimento, which could easily be described as folk but has been given names like heavy meadow, future folk, and cosmic American which are all wildly accurate. Pentimento is a collection of profound lyrics tackling today’s issues, personal anecdotes, and much more. On the nine track album you find that each song carries its own personality yet as a whole, the album flows together seamlessly.

Lilah wrote, played, and recorded Pentimento with the help of one other producer, Howard Bilerman. Along with the classic instruments you’d hear on any folk album, the artist also added in a pump organ, chord organ, harmonium, and synthesizers which really help the piece stand out from any other current folk album. In the song “Father Daughter Ghost,” we hear a mix of machine and instrument which aids the message behind the song which focuses on what seems to be the past, present, and future of an ongoing situation.

Beside the unique instruments used in making such an emotion evoking album, Larson’s voice is what really sets the bar so high. In “You Are” the listener can really get a sense of the power the artist carries with seemingly no effort. With such a particular, soulful voice, each song on the album is laced with raw emotion and a glimmering sense of optimism for a brighter future in otherwise trying times.  Pentimento is available on Spotify, Apple Music, and ITunes now and will hopefully be hitting the road for a tour soon!
