My Morning Jacket // Live @ Huntington Bank Pavillion // 7.2.22

Article and Photos by: Charles Yamabe

Chicago, IL — Psychedelic Rock, Southern Rock, and Alt Rock, are all words that could describe My Morning Jacket. However, there arent enough words to adequately represent their loyal mass of adoring fans. This night was extra special as the band had just comeback from a brief hiatus (missing a handful of shows) due to a COVID infection. Fans had gathered from all across the country in Chicago to get their fix of their favorite band. Seeing how, this was the band’s triumphant return, My Morning Jacket was not about to let them down.

Taking the stage at sunset, at the outdoor ampitheater, the band came out to a triumphant roar of the crowd. The first song they jumped into was “Mahgeetah,” an absolutely perfect sunset song. With gliding melodies and beautiful vocals it floated the fans to the edge of the stratospshere. With the sun quickly fading away and the beautiful night skyline of Chicago starting to show it’s form, the band transitioned perfectly into “Gideon.”

With nightfall amongst us, it was time for the phenomenal light show to begin. An alluring rainbow of colors danced across the stage as My Morning Jacket continued to dazzle the fans. It’s hard to explain the magic of the moment when you attend a show like My Morning JacketThe fans come from all walks of life. It’s sort of like a jam band crowd however, at the same time, not at all. Everyone moves and grooves as one but with a unique form of respect not seen at typical jam band shows.

The best representation of the band that I have ever seen was from an “American Dad Episode.” The hippie daughter and the CIA Dad come together and forget their differences. They both become immersed in the music. It’s that depiction that was etched so perfectly at Chicago show. My Morning Jacket is something you have to experience live, preferably during the summer, at an outdoor venue.

The setlist from the Chicago was extensive during the two and half hour show. To view the full setlist, click the link below.
