CHARLOTTE, NC — At noon, Eggy posted on their Facebook page that there were only 30 tickets left for tonight’s show in Charlotte, less than an hour later, the Visulite Theatre announced that it was sold out. When the line began an hour before the doors opened, fans that couldn’t get tickets walked up and down the sidewalk hoping for a miracle. The band has been growing exponentially over the past couple years, turning out a bigger crowd each time they visit the city, and this stop for their “Here & Now” tour saw them hit a new level. They’ve been touring relentlessly for the past few years, which has also shown in their playing and musical communication on stage.

The four piece took the stage for their first set to the sound of a packed house cheering, as they settled their way into “Boom or Bust.” The extended improvisations weaved seamlessly with the composed parts of the song set the perfect tone for an electrifying evening. As they continued through the set, they demonstrated their mastery of dynamics, with impeccable peaks and valleys, bringing the level to a pin drop level before exploding into a psychedelic blast. Musically, the band transitioned flawlessly between rock, soul, funk, jazz, and everything in between, with the members moving together with psychic precision. The set contained a high-energy cover of Elton John’s “Bennie & the Jets,” before surprising fans with “Windows,” for its first appearance in five years.

Eggy’s second set was a non-stop musical sandwich, beginning and ending with “Shatter,” while moving fluently through “Shadow,” “Atomic Age” and the rarely played Airto Moreira cover “Partido Alto.” The smooth changes continued  into “Shallow Rivers,” transitioning in and out of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard’s “Interior People,” taking the jam further into the psychedelic realm before returning to the breezy chorus of “Shallow Rivers.” The intensity of the music grew with a return to the trio of songs that began the set, in reverse order, concluding over an hour straight with an explosive reprise of “Shatter.” Forgoing the typical act of leaving the stage to return for an encore, the band opted to simply play a bouncy run through of “Smile,” serving as a perfect cool down from a heater of a show.
