CHARLOTTE, NC — Connecticut genre-bending jam band Eggy made a tour stop at Heist Brewery and Barrel Arts on Wednesday, bringing their energetic, improv-heavy show to an enthusiastic Charlotte crowd. The band has been hitting the scene hard lately and building a loyal fanbase, and currently celebrating a spot on the 2024 Jam Cruise. Opening with the original tune “One Stop Shop” and transitioning into “Second Step,” the quartet shows impeccable song-writing abilities, though with only one studio album to their credit, the majority of their songs are only known by their ever-evolving live versions. Most of the songs in the two-hour setlist flowed smoothly into the next, rarely taking time to breathe between songs. “Sweaters for Strawmen” kicked off a non-stop musical tapestry which included a cover of Little Feat’s “Rocket in My Pocket” among others, with an impressive drum solo by Alex Bailey. As the band began to re-enter the jam, fans recognized the familiar tune of the Grateful Dead’s “The Music Never Stopped,” an appropriate cover for the homestretch of tonight’s show, finally closing with the original “Today and Tomorrow.”

The band followed a short break from the stage with an encore of “Graceless,” becoming the sole original of the night that has a studio recording. From their album Watercolor Days, fans sang loudly with the chorus of “I’d rather have grace than be graceless, I’d rather have faith than be faithless” as Eggy wrapped up an evening of transcendent jams and impressive musicianship.
